Batteries that use lithium-ion technology can be found in virtually every type of electric car these days. And before it needs to be replaced entirely, it has a service life of around ten years.

The batteries used in electric cars are highly recyclable. With approximately 90 percent of the cell being reclaimable through various commercial activities. This is something that can be accomplished if the businesses involved in recycling make money off of the process. Since that’s what corporations are made for.

Wiring and plastics can be dismantled and recycled after cleaning them. And because of their high toxicity, flammability, and explosive potential, the valuable mined metals stored in the electrolyte of the battery cell can be highly hazardous to access. So, before any cell components may be recycled, these dangers must be eliminated first. And because of this dangers, the number of discarded EV batteries will continue to rise.

Now, the development of second-life uses for high-voltage batteries is something that a few automakers, such as Volvo, have committed themselves to do. This is a huge step toward creating a closed-loop system that guarantees the recycling of all components found in automobiles.

Additionally, Honda intends to work along with Societe Nouvelle d’Affinage des Metaux, generally known as SNAM. Their goal is to collect and recycle used batteries so they can be put to another use or precious components can be extracted from them.

And on August 1 of this year, a firm called Ascend Elements, with headquarters in Westborough, Massachusetts, revealed that it intended to invest between $310 million and $1 billion in Phase 1.

They said that they want to construct an environmentally friendly lithium-ion battery materials facility in Hopkinsville, which is located in Kentucky. The organization anticipates that the groundbreaking ceremony will take place before the year 2022 comes to a close.

So, the company, formerly Battery Resourcers, is now known as Ascend Elements after a rebranding and website overhaul this year. This corporation utilizes a recycling and engineering materials company that is vertically integrated for lithium-ion batteries.

The cutting-edge products and services offered by the company sparked the idea for the new brand. And their new method reclaims essential battery elements from abandoned batteries and garbage.

This brings them to higher value and performance as tailored battery active materials. Therefore, these reclaimed parts can then be reused in new batteries.

The pioneering production facility, dubbed “Apex 1,” was the first of its kind. It will serve as the headquarters for the cutting-edge Hydro-to-Cathode direct precursor synthesis process technology that the business has developed.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said, “I am tremendously proud of how we in Kentucky have taken the initiative to assure our state will be a leader in the automotive sector of the future.” “I am also extremely pleased with how we in Kentucky have taken the initiative,”

Kentucky officials see the arrival of Ascend Elements in Hopkinsville as a major development toward establishing Kentucky as a pioneer in the EV market.

Now, Ascent Elements is concentrating its efforts on expanding in a manner that is environmentally responsible and beneficial to many companies.

The plant in Hopkinsville’s Commerce Industrial Park II spans over 140 acres. In addition, the Apex 1 plant, which spans 500,000 square feet. However, it won’t start producing anything until late 2023.

The facility may undergo several development phases in the future, and the company intends to hire as many as 400 employees to fill a range of positions. And because of this, they are looking for a wide variety of candidates, from warehouse associates and production operators to chemists and engineers.

The project is anticipated to potentially have an economic impact on the state of Kentucky of $4.4 billion. And that’s only throughout construction and the first ten years of existence!

Michael O’Kronley, chief executive officer of Ascend Elements, stated that “excellent jobs” are being brought to towns throughout the country by industries related to clean energy and climate technology. And our decision to situate Apex 1 in southwest Kentucky has brought us nothing but joy, and we couldn’t be happier.
